The OASIS assessment documents that the patient is receiving continuous oxygen therapy (___ L/min) and is an active smoker. This combination presents a significant fire and burn hazard and requires immediate skilled nursing intervention to provide oxygen safety education and assess the patient’s understanding and compliance.
Smoking while using oxygen greatly increases the risk of fire, severe burns, property damage, and death. Failure to provide and document oxygen safety teaching on the first skilled nursing visit may place the patient and others in the home at serious risk.
CMS Conditions of Participation require the comprehensive assessment to identify all safety risks and the plan of care to address those risks with appropriate interventions. Failure to provide and document oxygen safety teaching for an active smoker on continuous oxygen may be cited as an incomplete assessment and inadequate care planning.
Skilled nursing is expected to provide oxygen safety instruction at the initial visit, including no-smoking precautions, keeping oxygen away from open flames, proper storage of equipment, and actions to take in an emergency. Documenting this teaching demonstrates that the agency addressed a high-risk safety concern promptly and appropriately.
